Summer has officially begun here. The temps are up, sun is shining and the kids' summer activities start next week! I have loved watching our oldest in swimming lessons and "teeny ball" in the past years and now look forward to our second babe joining in the action as well.

One new adventure we have taken on this year is nature study. With our children being 5, 3 and 6 months old, we're not into the intense studies (obviously, we're just pre-k here!) and our nature studies are more like "scavenger hunts". We read books on interesting aspects of God's creation (i.e. lately it's been bird eggs) and then go out and experience hands-on.

Our nature study adventures take us to the nearby state park with friends, to grandma & grandpa's farm for a weekend and sometimes simply out for a picnic by the river here. I pack up the Camelbak "diaper bag" full of snacks, bug spray, sun protection and diapers of course. Then we're off!

Last week we found this little nest in the shrubs right by our house. Because it's nearby, we are able to watch this nest to see if any birds do return or if it is abandoned. The finished product of tedious nest-building is amazing to see up close!

It's been beautiful and extra warm lately, in the 80's and 90's even, so we dress the part and I'm almost always wearing a hat. My Buff Trucker Tech Cap is a favorite because of its ventilation and built-in sweatband! The kids start with hats on but, because they tend to drop clothing as quickly as trees lose their leaves, my best bet is slathering them in sunscreen.

Shortly after finding the abandoned nest by our house, we found part of a Robin's egg shell to match the illustration in our nature study book!

These little nature "scavenger hunts" are so much fun! It's one of the many ways we #livemorenow in the summer months and, as we hit the swimming pool next week, I know my BUFF gear is going to be getting a lot of use. Many sunny days lie ahead!

Oh yeah, and a pretty important marathon coming up, too. (P.S. Is it time to taper yet?!)

How will you #LiveMoreNow this week?

#Gmas18 Training W14 Recap

Follow along the 16-week journey as I train for my 10th 26.2, the Grandma’s Marathon coming up on June 16, 2018. I look forward to running with fellow BibRave Pros Angie, Amy and Jenn!

Fartlek Run 8.01 mi, 01:07 @ 08:19 pace that was supposed to be 1:00 @ 5k pace then 1:00 recovery jog. I’m still stiff from Saturday’s long run struggle and took this morning’s run easy instead. Still picked up the pace for 15 intervals of 1:00 but there was no 5k pace left in me! Foam rolling today!!!!

(Treadmill) Easy Effort 3.1 mi, 00:30 @ 09:40 pace because I wasn’t able to make it out this morning with a fever-ish baby. Praise the Lord he’s doing better now! Hope we sleep.

Tempo Intervals 6.06 mi, 00:48 @ 07:55 avg pace with 1 Mile x 3 @ 7:10, 7:13, 7:11 (3:00 recovery jog) followed by a couple hill intervals on my pathetically small, grassy “hill”. I tried.

Long Run 14.03 mi, 01:58 @ 08:22 pace with 9 miles outside and 5 miles on the treadmill. Hubs is working today so I fit in the miles “creatively”. Ha!

Easy Effort 3 mi, 00:29 @ 09:48 pace for double stroller run/family bike before bed!

TOTAL MILEAGE: 34.2 miles

  1. That scavenger hunt looks fun! The boys and I used to do nature walks but we didn't formally scavenge. I so enjoyed those times together.

    2 weeks to go!

  2. How fun! It is something to keep them busy and engaged. Heck you are never too old for a scavenger hunt. I made one for my sister the other day.

    1. I agree, we never are too old to enjoy a good scavenger hunt. I really enjoy our nature walks too!

  3. I love your creativity to get in the long run. I can't believe how close Grandma's is- almost here! Best of luck to you!

    1. It's not my favorite to split the run up, but you gotta do what you gotta do!

  4. What a lovely way to spend time with kids, keep them active and curious about nature and life! I don't take enough walks with mine - thanks for the inspiration.

    1. It's so wonderful to see them appreciating the outdoors... and burning off energy. That's a huge plus :)

  5. How cool that you are teaching this all to your kids at such an early age!

    1. It's really been fun! Sometimes I wonder if they are teaching me more than I'm teaching them.

  6. I bet your boys love those scavenger hunts! My middle (college age) son still loves to go! In fact we plan to hike a trail while on vacation this week for that very purpose. Enjoy your taper. Thanks for linking!

    1. I love reading about your adventures with your boys on the blog! I hope my boys will still adventure with me when they're older.
