Race week has arrived. Eeek!!!  Tapering brings a mix of emotions. I'm excited to return to Fargo, anxious about logistics in a busy city, and just plain happy that training was enjoyable even with a 3-year-old and  almost 1-year-old at home. All nerves aside, toeing the line should be a celebration. Race day is like a gigantic party celebrating the fact that you SURVIVED marathon training! Training is the hard work, isn't it? There is just something about running and racing that I love. Maybe it's the energy/nerves combo or the large amount of bananas present at most races or the herds of sweaty people that love to run too. Really, what's not to love? Racing as a family makes it 110 times even more special! Leo, E, and I ran the June Bug 10k together on June 14th. Leo even held my hand crossing the finish; it pretty much made my month :) E worked his little diapered rear off as he slept for most of the 6.2 miles in the stroller. I will be taking it easy on the running for a while as the next race isn't 'til October. I suppose I still run more than the average American though now it is an every-other-day-or-so sort of thing. To switch things up a bit I have been rollerblading with the jogging stroller and biking with the trailer. E really wants his own pair of roller-blades someday. He keeps trying to run away with mine... Rollerblading with the jogging stroller is the next best thing...

Have you heard of the Spartan Race? I hadn't until last week! I'm just a simple long-distance runner but, I have to admit, it does appeal to the farm kid side of me. Growing up on a farm is like living on an "impromptu obstacle course". What kid doesn't love to run around in the pasture, clean barn, and climb anything and everything? And then there are the less enjoyable obstacles... running into the electric fence, excessive dirt (aka manure!), and hauling square alfalfa bales that are a bit too green. Now that I'm off the farm, I push myself through running (well... and through parenting). In whatever physical activity you do, there is a thrill in pushing yourself beyond your limits. The Spartan Race is a hard-core obstacle course designed to do just that. They even have barbed wire! What a treat. Make the wire electric and I'm sure any farm kid would feel at home! Dirt, fun, sweat, and no couch. What's not to love! Spartan ...
